Proctalgia fugax constipation

Proctalgia fugax is anal pain that doesn’t have a specific cause. This pain is usually caused by intense muscle spasms in or around the canal of the anus. It’s similar to another type of anal pain called levator ani syndrome.

The pain is slightly different in levator ani syndrome, and may last days instead. While it is not linked to a specific disease, the intense muscle spasms of the levator ani muscle are thought to be affected by a muscle disorder or nerve condition. The organs include the prostate in men and the uterus in women.

It is supported by the pelvic floor muscles. Another contributing cause of proctalgia fugax is excessive anxiety and stress. Constipation means that a person has three or fewer bowel movements in a week.

The stool can be hard and dry. Sometimes it is painful to pass. At one time or another, almost everyone gets constipated. In most cases, it lasts a short time and is not serious. The pain is considered to be fleeting, in that it may last a few seconds or a few minutes before going away completely.

Despite their benign nature, they can cause severe distress to the sufferer.

As such, pain associated with constipation (either chronic, or acute), penetrative anal intercourse, trauma (such as tears or fissures of the rectal sphincter or anal canal), side-effects of some medications (particularly opiates ), or rectal foreign body insertion preclude this diagnosis.
