Vaginitis and vulvovaginitis

Vulvovaginitis is a common infection of the vulva and vagina. Symptoms may include itching, discomfort while urinating, and an increased amount of strong-smelling vaginal discharge. Vaginitis can cause itching, pain, discharge, and odor. También puede afectar la vulva, la parte externa de los genitales de la mujer. Certain types of vaginitis may result in complications during pregnancy.

La vaginitis puede causar picazón, dolor, secreción y olor.

Uncomplicated VVC Diagnostic Considerations. A diagnosis of Candida vaginitis is suggested clinically by the presence of external dysuria and vulvar pruritus, pain, swelling, and redness. This topic will discuss the clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and diagnosis of vulvovaginal candidiasis. The cause is usually a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria or an infection.

Reduced estrogen levels after menopause and some skin disorders can also cause vaginitis. It typically occurs when there is a decrease in the acidity (increase in pH level) of the vagina or an infection. The diagnosis is clinical and treatment includes application of topical estrogen creme.

How is pediatric vulvovaginitis diagnosed?

After carefully reviewing the history and symptoms, the doctor will perform a physical exam, which includes looking at the external vulva and rectal area. It has been estimated that about of all women get a vaginal yeast infection at least once. The vulva is a female’s outer genital area that includes the labia and the opening of the vagina and urethra. Candida vulvovaginitis also has been called vulvovaginal candidiasis, candidal vaginitis , monilial infection, or vaginal yeast infection. The vulva and vagina of a young girl who has not gone through puberty can easily become infected and irritated.

Esta es una afección que puede afectar indistintamente a mujeres y niñas de todas las edades. Often it is shortened to atrophic vaginitis , as it is vaginal tissue that is most often symptomatic. Atrophic vulvovaginitis means thinned genital tissues in women.

Due its prevalence in older women, it is also known as senile vulvovaginitis. What causes atrophic vulvovaginitis ? The most common cause is bacteria, a virus, fungus, or pinworms. Before puberty, girls do not have pubic hair to prevent germs from entering the vagina.

Abnormal vaginal development can also cause vulvovaginitis. In premenopausal women, infection is the most common cause. After menopause, a low level of estrogen often leads to vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis ). The incidence of atrophic vaginitis depends on how it is defined.

Desquamative inflammatory vaginitis , an exception, has an unknown etiology, but a Gram stain of culture often reveals streptococci.

It’s super common and usually easy to treat. Almost everyone with a vulva gets vaginitis at some point. Most often, vulvovaginitis is caused when the vulvar and vaginal skin become irritated.

This irritation can be caused by the use of products that are too strong for the delicate vulvar skin, clothing that rubs, dampness and less commonly, a skin or vaginal infection. Even young girls can get this condition, and it’s a form of vaginal inflammation or infection. You may have also heard of this condition being called vulvitis or vaginitis.
