The Starting Line chapter 2. Build software for yourself. It challenges a lot of what is often thought of as the status quo for building a company. The book details how to build a web app and explains the business, design, programming, and marketing philosophies of 37signals. It is a precursor to our latest book REWORK.


Want to build a successful web app? There are lots of ways to build a product and run a business.

It consists a bunch of essays to create and manage a better software company. Contains keep-it-simple insights, contrarian points of view, and unconventional approaches to software design. Most of “Getting real” is about approach and attitude, and it requires your co-workers to share it with you to work. The book’s strength and weakness is the experience of the authors: they started signals on their own, and advise largely from that context.


Getting real ” in simple words explains why a lot of new products are going astray by overdeveloping their concept. With unnecessary things like explicitly detailed specifications in the beginning, scheduled meetings that don’t solve anything or taking care of aspects that don’t achieve anything directly related to their business model. I read this a couple of weeks ago in one sitting, and really loved it. A recent post on 37Signals ’s blog is interesting. Jason wants somebody to help them with customer conversion and retention. It’s long been an accepted approach to developing design or technology solutions.
