Red snake black head

This snake was found in the early morning in a small pit trap set out to survey the reptiles, rodents, and other small animals that were crawling around in the coastal chapparal habitat. It lives in lowland rain forest, including those on islands, but it is considered uncommon. Its head appears to be partially flattened.

On the upper lip is a streak of white. The belly can be either a cream colour or white.

On some species the color may be darker on the head and neck and become lighter on the back part of the body. Some may appear uniform in color in some light and at some angles. Several snakes have similar markings, but coral snakes have red bands sandwiched between yellow or white bands.

The southern ringneck snake , sometimes called the Florida ringneck snake , is black with a red ring around its neck. There are other, similar species with orange and yellow bands around their necks. Had a baby snake in yard with bright red head and black body, what kind is it?
