A common shrub in Iowa is the burning bush or winged spindle tree, Euonymus (yew-on-ih-muhss) alatus. It can be used in mass plantings to create a shrub border, pruned to form a neat hedge or serve as a striking accent landscape plant. It originated from Korea, China, Eastern Russia and Japan and is often called winged. Burning bushes belong to the large celastraceae family, and are native to areas of central Japan, Korea and China, as well as more easterly portions of Asia. Burning Bush grows rather quickly and makes a beautiful statement in almost any yard.


Euonymus alatus, commonly called winged euonymus, burning bush , winged burning bush or winged spindle tree, is a dense, mounde spreading, flat-toppe multi-stemmed shrub that is particularly noted for its fiery red fall foliage color. It is native to forests, woodlands and scrub areas in eastern Russia, Japan, China and Korea. Burning bush care also includes occasional pruning to keep the size down and remove any broken or damaged branches. The natural shape of the bush is appealing, so pruning is not necessary, but if you wish to trim the plant, do so in very early spring before leaves appear. It can make a goo natural hedge with changes in every season.
