However, there are a number of differences between plant and animal cells. While animal cells come in various sizes and tend to have irregular shapes, plant cells are more similar in size and are typically rectangular or cube shaped. A plant cell also contains structures not found in an animal. Cell Wall This is a rigid structure surrounding the cell and mainly consists of cellulose.


It is arranged in layers as primary cell wall, middle lamella, and secondary cell wall. Structures Unique to Animal Cells. Since animal cells are softer than plant cells , centrioles are required to ensure the chromosomes are in the proper location when the cell divides.

It is these cells , tissues, and organs that carry out the dramatic lives of plants. A typical plant cell is represented by the diagram in Figure 2. Both plant and animal cells contain nucleus along with similar organelles. One of the distinctive aspects of a plant cell is the presence of a cell wall outside the cell membrane. The structures of different types of cells are related to their functions.

Animal cells and plant cells have features in common, such as a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes. There are few organelles or subcellular structures unique to plant cells as follows: Chloroplast- Contains chlorophyll pigments associated with photosynthsis process. Cell Wall- Made up of cellulose and also contains Ca and Mg Pectate.


It gives mechanical support to the cells. Vacuoles- Although this organelle is not exclusive in plants. For example, animal cells do not have a cell wall or chloroplasts but plant cells do. Animal cells are mostly round and irregular in shape while plant cells have fixe rectangular shapes. The cell wall provides support, helps maintain cell shape, and prevents the cell from taking on too much water and bursting.

Cell Wall Like the cell walls in bacteria, fungi, algae, and some archaea, plant cell walls are found just outside the plasma membrane and provide the cells structure and protection. Animal and plant cells have some of the same cell components in common including a nucleus, Golgi complex, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, mitochondria, peroxisomes, cytoskeleton, and cell (plasma) membrane. While animal and plant cells have many common characteristics, they are also different.
